What is a Doula?
“Doula” (pronounced “doola”) is a Greek word meaning “woman servant or caregiver”. In the English language, it now refers to an experienced woman who offers emotional and practical support to a woman (or couple) before, during and after childbirth. As a doula, my aim is to help you empower yourself to have the best birthing experience possible.
I have experience of hospital birth, home birth, unassisted birth, water birth, hypnobirthing and lotus birthing. I work with pregnant women, babies and children every week, and am a member of my local Maternity Services User Group.
As well as a doula, I’m also a Babywearing Consultant and Trainer. antenatal teacher and postpartum nurturer. I am passionate about pregnancy, birth, babies and children.
I believe every woman has a birthright, to claim a wonderful, empowered birthing experience, wherever and however she chooses to birth.
A doula can be invaluable. A committed, passionate and empathetic doula strives to be the best she can be for each woman she serves. It is our duty to keep informed and up to date with new information, to keep our heart in our role and to love and support you with every fibre of our being.
I aim to help you navigate the minefield of information related to pregnancy, birth and beyond, so you come out informed and empowered to make the right choices for you and your family. My role as a doula varies from client to client. Just as no birth is identical, neither is my support. I tailor it to your specific needs, with the underlying aim of supporting you and your family during this incredible journey, to help you achieve your goals and doing what you need me to do.
During your pregnancy I visit, getting to know you, forging a connection and a relationship based on trust. We will explore your wishes, hopes and any fears you may have. We work together to define my role in your labour and birth as you wish it to be, ensuring I can help create a safe space for you during this time. Pregnancy and birth have the potential to be life changing in so many ways (including the obvious!), whether you’re a first time mum or have several children.
Among many other things, I can provide you with emotional and physical support (extending this to your partner/mum/friend/anyone else where needed), help keep you calm and focused, reassure you, practical help such as fetching food and drinks, offering suggestions of positions or comfort measures, protecting your birth space (before and after), helping you and your partner to keep connected and not distracted by other goings on, and provide help entertaining/settling other little ones if at home (where necessary). You decide what you envisage my role to entail, so I can support you as best as I can.
I’m also able to introduce you to a wonderful, thriving community of local parents, support you with breastfeeding, and go over babywearing options if you’re interested (plus teach you how to use your chosen sling safely and effectively). I also have a wealth of information and personal experience with things like breastfeeding, co-sleeping and cloth nappying/elimination communication.
Thank you for considering inviting me along for the ride. I would love to hear from you if you feel I may be the doula for you. I always offer a free, no obligation initial meeting, for you to get a better feel for me as a person and to ask any questions you may have. I would also encourage you to interview as many local doulas that you like the sound of before making your decision.
